Narrow Yard Landscape Design

A video transcript featuring Ive Haugeland, Shades of Green Landscape Architecture

This is a pretty new back yard and the neighbors are totally inspired to do the same as you can hear from all the noise here, but the clients came to us with a lot of issues. They were remodeling their house at the same time and they wanted to have a garden that could accommodate a lot of uses.

They love outdoor living, they spend as much time as they can outside, so they wanted a big deck outside of the house with a big lounging area. They wanted a pool, they wanted a fire pit, they wanted a hot tub, they wanted a play area, they wanted space to grow some food, they wanted different seating areas for different times of the day with sun and shade. And they wanted a lawn. So there was a lot of stuff to fit into this little back yard.

Deck design and materialsWe did this big, huge deck at the back of the house, and it's made of ipe and it has room for a barbecue, it has a little bar that's kind of built into the railing, and it has a big, great lounging area with these outdoor sofas. On the front of the deck, we added some planters and we added room for espaliered fruit trees. The house is a pretty traditional house but the client wants to go a little more contemporary. That's why we choose the ipe. Ipe is a beautiful, very durable wood for decking so that's why we ended up using that. For railing we did a cable and wood rail, and then we used these horizontal boards to kind of skirt the deck. But it also has these wing walls that are in the same shingle as the house.

Pool location considerationsThe property has a lot of mature trees, so that was another thing we had to consider. We placed the pool as the mid focal point for everything. That was getting it between all the trees and also getting it in a place that has sun a lot of the day.
